Honorary Alderman Michael Wilkes

We have been informed this morning of the very sad news that Honorary Alderman Michael Wilkes passed away on Friday 17th April.  michael-wilkes-3

Michael was elected to City Council on 3 May 1984-89 as an SDP (Social Democratic Party) Councillor, 1989–92 as an Independent Councillor and May 2000-12 as a Liberal Democrat Councillor, for Hall Green Ward. He became Lord Mayor of Birmingham 2009-10, Deputy Lord Mayor 2010-11 and was appointed an Honorary Alderman on 22nd May 2012.

During his time on the City Council, he served as a member on many following Committees:

Catering Committee (1984-85); Social Services Committee (1984-86); Central District Committee (1985-86); Women’s Committee (1984-85); Education Committee (1985-87); Finance and Management Committee (1987-88); General Purposes Committee (1988-89), Crime Prevention Sub (1988-89), Legislation Sub (1988-89), Motor Racing Sub (88-89), Nomination Sub (88-89), Services to Members Sub (88-89); Contract Services B Committee (1990-91); National Exhibition Centre and International Convention Centre Committee (1990-91); Budget Scrutiny Committee (2000-2001); Co-ordinating Overview and Scrutiny Committee (2001-06) – Chairman (2004-06); Council Business Management Committee (2004-05); Standards Committee (2004-05); Audit Committee (2006-08 & 2011-12); Public Protection Committee (2006-09 & 2010-11); Trusts and Charities Sub Committee (2007-09 & 2010-12) – Vice Chairman (2011-12) and also serving on the WMLGA – Regeneration Conference (2000-01).

Michael was a real champion for his community and our sincerest wishes go out to Vivienne, his family and friends.
