Ed in Brum to launch youth jobs campaign

Ed Miliband visited Birmingham today and met young engineering apprentices at EEF Training in Reddings Lane, Tyseley.

Ed highlighted Labour’s plans to tackle soaring youth unemployment, an issue that he believes can be tackled and one that was ‘solvable’. There are 15,000 young people unemployed in Birmingham, with the national picture showing over a million young people not in work or training.

The plan for Labour’s Youth Jobs Taskforce is based on ensuring that every company which gets a major government contract should have to guarantee a set of apprenticeships, they must commit to training young people for high-skilled jobs. As a rule of thumb, 1 million pounds should guarantee one apprenticeship so in the case of HS2 which is £33bn, 33,000 apprenticeships should be delivered.
